Jaisalmer also known as the “The Golden City” is a city of towering forts crowned by the magnificent Jaisalmer Fort and famously known for its sand dunes. Jaisalmer Fort offers breathtaking views of the city, and is also the 2nd oldest fort built in Rajasthan. You are bound to be amazed by the architecture. Despite the commercialism, it’s hard not to be enchanted by this desert citadel. Beneath the ramparts, particularly to the north, the narrow streets of the old city conceal magnificent havelis, all carved from the same golden honey sandstone as the fort.

Before Indian independence, the town served as the capital of the Jaisalmer State, ruled by the Bhati Rajputs. Jaisalmer stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone and is crowned by the ancient Jaisalmer Fort. This fort contains a royal palace and several ornate Jain temples.
In the narrow lanes of the main city of Jaisalmer, lies the magnificent Patwon-ki-haveli, known for its pretty paintings, intricate carvings and a grandiose style of architecture. The entire complex is not a single haveli but a cluster of five smaller beautiful havelis.
The "Golden City," Jaisalmer, is set on the edge of the Thar Desert. The best time to visit Jaisalmer is from October to March when the temperature is acceptable and moderate, and it is the peak tourism season in Jaisalmer. Therefore, knowing the best travel time is essential before planning a Jaisalmer trip.
